The Project will identify, design and construct safety improvements for east-west facilities across the Bruce R. Watkins corridor between 51st Street and Gregory Boulevard (71st Street), with emphasis upon pedestrian, bicycle and/or vehicular facilities and improved connections.

Scope: |
The project aims to improve safety for pedestrians and vehicles (motorized and non-motorized).
Project Length = Intersection nodes (east-west) across a 2.45 mile segment of Bruce R. Watkins;
Number of Lanes varies for east-west streets.
The proposed Project will expand connectivity and accessibility options for people living, working and visiting in southeast Kansas City. Funding will enable better connections, improved access management, and a safer pedestrian and cyclist environment.
Bruce R. Watkins (U.S. Highway 71) is an important major arterial within the City; however, it limits the ease of east-west travel on the Citys surface street network. The Project proposes evaluation of the corridor and recommendation of investments that will reinforce and improve east-west connectivity of the Citys multimodal surface transportation network between 51st Street and Gregory Boulevard. Planning, design, and construction phases will identify locations for implementation of improvements to the Citys east-west network. Recommendations may include improved sidewalks, crosswalks, bicycle facilities, lighting, landscaping, intersection improvements, lane configuration modifications, signalization and timing, etc. Improvements may also include a pedestrian bridge, tunnel, or grade-separated intersection, or other solution identified through City, State (MoDOT) and stakeholder input and collaboration.
This Project will continue the work of the Citys Vision Zero program and coordinate with the new Transportation / Mobility Plan component of the Citys KC Spirit Playbook comprehensive plan.
