Project Number: 1429
Organization: MoDOT
Project Name: I-470 and View High Interchange Modification
City(ies), County(ies), State: Missouri Department of Transportation
Routes, interchanges and/or intersections: I-470 and View High Drive
Primary Project Mode: Highway/roadway
Supplementary Project Mode(s): * Active Transportation )
This project will serve residents of Kansas City and Lees Summit directly, with indirect benefits to the individuals that are arriving to use the new Sports Complex on the NE corner of View High Drive and I-470. There will be trails, amenities, and a sports complex that will be constructed in the near future. The trails or sidewalks will go through our interchange on View High Drive as its reconfigured into a Diverging Diamond Interchange.
Project Purpose: * System operations and management )
Project Description: The purpose of this project is to provide improved traffic operations and safely accommodate the anticipated traffic associated with this area-wide growth and development within both Kansas City and Lees Summit. The needs to be met by the interchange improvements provided with this project include: 1. Improved Capacity and Safety - Converting to a DDDI will allow the existing four-lane bridge spans to remain, while providing additional capacity and safety benefits for years to come. 2. Provide Road User Benefits - This interchange needs to provide a good balance between local access onto I-470, as well as offering improved mobility along the rapidly developing View High Drive corridor. 3. Support Economic Development: The proposed interchange improvements should be a cost-effective means of promoting economic development.
Scope: The travel modes that will be served include vehicles, pedestrians, freight and transit. The scope of the project is an interchange reconfiguration. The preferred alternative is to modify the existing tight diamond interchange into a 4-lane Diverging Diamond Interchange with pedestrian facilities. The safety and operation benefits of a DDI have been proven as the allow the pedestrians to cross only twice at safe locations, and it allows the motorist to have a better coordinated signal system with potentially only 1 stop at a traffic signal if headed in the N to W or S to E directions.
