Project Number: 1324
Organization: KDOT
Project Name: I-70/K-7 Interchange KA-1003-10 (Phase 5)

Routes, interchanges and/or intersections: K-7 and K-7 and Kansas Ave.
Primary Project Mode: Highway/roadway

The design of this project accommodates motorists and freight vehicles. This project will add capacity and reduce bottlenecks at K-7/I-70 by eliminating 4 at-grade signals and replacing with grade separations. Bike/ped crossings are included with the two interchanges at Kansas Ave and 130th Street thus improving safety and mobility for those crossing at those locations. This improvement is expected to improve mobility, access, and connectivity to regional activity centers and destinations for motorists ad freight shippers. Transit currently does not operate in the corridors, but the facility would accommodate service in the future should it be initiated.
Project Purpose: * System expansion (added capacity) * System preservation, rehabilitation or replacement * System operations and management )
Project Description: Reconstruction, capacity and safety improvements of the I-70/K-7 interchange. The interchange concept includes interchanges at I-70, 130th St, Kansas Ave. K-7 and I-70 will have C-D roads to separate thru traffic from ramp traffic. Primary users will be motorists and freight, but design accommodates transit and provides crossing points for bike/ped at the Kansas Ave and 130th Street interchanges.
Scope: Construct K-7 to a 6-Lane section with a single point urban interchange at K-7/Kansas Avenue. K-7 is to be a 6-lane section with C-D roads in locations to improve weave lengths. Project will remove 4 at-grade intersections, addressing crash severity and frequency, by providing 2 service interchanges at Kansas Ave and 130th Street, and a System-to-System interchange at K-7/I-70. Acceleration/deceleration improved at ramp locations, and route continuity/ with I-70 Construct the east half of the proposed interchange. Add the K-7 to westbound ramp movement to the west half of proposed interchange constructed under Proj. No. KA-1003-05. Construct the 134th St. overpass. Add acceleration and deceleration lanes to I-70. Add Collector/Distributor roads from K-7 east to 110th St.

I believe that this project is long overdue, living next to the K-7 and Kansas Avenue intersection, you can literally hear the police sirens daily. I am sure statistics show how high the rate of accidents is down this stretch of K-7 in Bonner Springs. It is a severe safety concern and hazard. This intersection needs to be redone and this project finished.
