A bridge over I-35 is part of the ultimate design of this interchange (DDI), but it is also a part of the interim interchange design. The portion of the interchange that is the bridge is the primary way that multiple modes of transportation will be connected and incorporated into the facility. The bridge will be designed to accommodate pedestrians via sidewalks, transit by way of a wider bridge, bike access to across the bridge, and will allow greater access for freight movement to and from the BNSF Intermodal Facility. The interim and ultimate configuration of the interchange will also allow for better traffic flow and efficiencies for vehicular and freight traffic onto and off of I-35.

Scope: |
To the extent that we know now, the number of lanes will be increased on Gardner Road and the I-35 ramps but no new through lanes are proposed on I-35. The project will serve motorists, freight, bicycles, and pedestrians in the interim and full build out. The major work is replacement of the Gardner road bridge over I-35 and reconfiguration of the interchange to a DDI. The bridge will accommodate the large amount of freight trucks coming through Gardner on their way to the intermodal facility in Edgerton.
