Green Infrastructure Implementation

Lee's Summit, Missouri

Rain garden and bioswale in Williams Grant Park
in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

How does this project advance the three pillars of sustainability — social equity, economic vitality and environmental stewardship?

This submission is a broad representation of the city’s open and progressive approach to Green Infrastructure (GI) through public, private and partnered infrastructure projects guided by the city’s policies and design direction over time for possible regional reference in the newly accepted MARC Green Infrastructure Playbook. The initiative of Lee’s Summit to implement GI can be modeled by other communities to advance the regions goals for environmental stewardship, while improving each infrastructure project through better-managed rainwater, right of way maintenance and function, cost-effectiveness, and enhancing the quality of life for all to enjoy more attractive, unique and natural surroundings. The example projects include linear, open and landscaped roadway rainwater conveyance systems, rain gardens, natural right of way landscapes, and multi-functional rainwater detention basins constructed over many years.

Project Goals:

This project aims to assemble local examples of GI to better demonstrate applicable possibilities, progress and understanding from which other communities and organizations may learn, replicate or improve upon. These examples may be additional references in the Green Infrastructure Playbook.

Project Description:

This project is a described collection of completed capital projects with GI elements implemented in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

Community Benefits and Lessons Learned:

Sharing examples of GI can benefit other communities by communicating what design elements may be considered G I, how they might appear, function and be improved upon. More project demonstrations can lead to more projects, better projects and reduce the uncertainty of incorporating sustainable design elements in everyday infrastructure.

Funding Sources and Partnerships:

These projects were constructed within the city of Lee’s Summit by the city and/or private sector, and in some instances through a public/ private partnership.
