June 2020

Dear Community Partner,

Once again it is time to get the word out about an exciting program for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)* participants, called Double Up Food Bucks, which will be offered at select grocery store and farmers market locations in the Kansas City area this year. The program will allow SNAP recipients shopping at participating locations to increase the value of their SNAP dollars and buy more fresh fruits and vegetables. There is no cost to participate. See the enclosed flier for participating 2020 locations.

How Double Up Food Bucks works in GROCERY STORES:

  1. SNAP customers buy fresh fruits and vegetables with their SNAP EBT card.
  2. They earn $1 Double Up Food Bucks (up to $25 per day) for each $1 they spend on fresh produce. The Double Up Food Bucks are tracked on their loyalty card, a store account or given as a coupon.
  3. They can spend Double Up Food Bucks on more fresh produce.
  4. Double Up Food Bucks can be earned through Oct. 31, 2020.

How Double Up Food Bucks works at FARMERS MARKETS:

  1. SNAP customers go to the market information tent to buy SNAP tokens with their SNAP EBT card. SNAP tokens can be used to buy any SNAP-eligible items.
  2. They get a matching number of Double Up Food Bucks tokens (up to $25 per day). DUFB tokens can be used to buy vegetables and fruits.
  3. They go shopping! Signs indicate vendors who accept the SNAP and DUFB tokens.

Double Up Food Bucks benefits our community in three ways:

  • Low-income families can buy more healthy food.
  • Local farmers gain new customers and make more money.
  • More food dollars stay in the local economy.

You can help: Please help get the word out about Double Up Food Bucks by downloading fliers and sharing information about Double Up Food Bucks in newsletters, bulletins and/or websites.

*SNAP is also known as Food Assistance or Food Stamps

**Due to COVID-19, some farmers markets may be adjusting their market day/hours and /or using an alternative process. Please check with the individual market.

The Double Up Heartland Collaborative believes that the need for the Double Up Food Bucks program is greater than ever. Not only are the numbers of people applying for SNAP greater than ever before, the need for people to eat a healthy diet is being highlighted as well. Evidence shows that eating a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables contributes to a healthy immune system, which helps a person fight off infectious diseases. Participating locations are making changes in how they operate to help people keep safe.
